FIRST BIS ON LAST DAY

The Granite City Kennel Club of St Cloud, Minnesota closed the show season Sunday with an encore in their hometown. The seven dogs that judge Dr Dana Ann Smith Massey considered were the Brittany, GCH CH Rainbow Flash's Ruggedly Handsome, the English Foxhound, Taillis Au Birchwood Tamsall, the Akita, CH Daykeyne Eatin My Cake Too, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, GCH CH Cumhill Hell Raiser, the Chinese Crested, GCH CH Dejavu I Want'A Talk About Me, the Tibetan Terrier, GCH CH Barnstorm To-Jo B'En Wicked @ Adominos By Dzine, and the German Shepherd Dog, Lockenhaus Rumor Has It V Kenlyn.

Getting his first AKC BIS on the last day of the season was the Akita from Australia, Tryst.  Packing up the reserve award was the StaffyBull, Ollie. Our congratulations to Tryst's breeder/owner/handler, Tabatha Buckley.

GCH CH Telltale American Ride

Judge Betty-Anne Stenmark spent the last day of the show season calling Sunday's Best In Show at the Delaware Water Gap Kennel Club show in Allentown PA.  The seven dogs that spent the afternoon with her were the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Telltale American Ride, the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Exlysta Aries Ciel Noir, the Akita, GCH CH CR-Wicca’s Trade Secret, the Bedlington Terrier, CH Ashcroft Mystic Red Sky At Night, the Pug, GCH CH Hill Country’s Tag I’m It, and the German Shepherd Dog, CH Harmonias Intense Desire.

Finishing one/two were the Springer, Randy, and the Akita, Trader.  Randy closes his year as the Number Three Sporting Dog with 14 BIS and 96 Sporting Groups.

AKC/EUKANUBA CHAMPION IS

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship continues to be our favorite dog show of the year.  It is a nail biting gauntlet of a week’s shows, with many surprises along the way.  Tonight we saw the country’s Number One Terrier, the Skye Terrier, GCH CH Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie, take the top prize at the nation’s biggest dog show.

Judge Ron Menaker’s RBIS was the Number One Dog All Breeds, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Claircreek’s Impression de Matisse.  Rounding out judge Ron Menaker’s final were the Field Spaniel, GCH CH Promenade Pay It Forward, the Bloodhound, GCH CH Flessner’s International S’Cess, the Shih Tzu, GCH CH Hallmark Jolei Rocket Power, the Standard Poodle, CH Afterglow Maverick Sabre, and the Old English Sheepdog, GCH CH Bugaboo’s Picture Perfect.

Charlie finishes the year as the Number Five Dog All Breeds with 32 BIS and 113 Terrier Groups to his credit.   Our congratulations to breeders/owners Eugene Z Zaphiris & Matthew H Stander, owner Victor Malzoni Jr, and handler Larry Cornelius.

SUNDAY IN CLEVELAND

GCH CH Shine’s Deck the Halls 

We hear from Cleveland OH that the Chinese Shar-Pei, GCH CH Shine’s Deck the Halls, finished the year with back2bck BIS, after judge Robert Stein named her his Best In Show at the Western Reserve Kennel Club show. Judge Stein chose the Boxer, GCH CH Brisbane "N" Blue Monday's Diamonds Are Decadent, for his RBIS after considering the English Setter, GCH CH Stargazer'N Wingfield Wait Wait Don't Tell, the 15” Beagle, CH Gwencalon's Tam O'Shanter, the Bedlington Terrier, GCH CH First Class Willow Wind The Phoenix, the Chinese Crested, GCH CH Kulana's Sh-Boom, and the Australian shepherd, GCH CH Collinswood Sparks Fly.

Tinsel finishes the year as the nation’s Number One Chinese Shar-Pei and Number Three Non-Sporting Dog with seven BIS and 55 Group Firsts.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN ORLANDO

The afternoon judging at the Sunday iteration of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship (AENC) saw fewer surprises than the morning.  Four of the five Top Terriers made it through the breed competition and will move on to tonight’s group judging, the Number One Two, Four, & Five, the Skye Terrier, GCH CH Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie, the Welsh Terrier, GCH CH aid of Honor, the Cairn Terrier, GCH CH Hjohoo's Save Hjour Love For Me, and the Norfolk Terrier, GCH CH Yarrow Venerie Winning Ticket.  The Number Three Terrier, the Scottish Terrier, GCH CH McVan’s To Russia with Love, was bested by GCH CH Roundtown Everyday Magic Of Maryscot, daughter of 2009 Number One Dog All Breeds, 2009 AENC BIS, & 2010 Westminster Kennel Club BIS, CH Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot.

The Working Group was less well represented with only five of the Top Twenty Working Dogs advancing.  Ten of the 20 opted not to compete and five of the 20 failed to make it out of the breed.  Advancing were the Number One Dog All Breeds and last year’s AENC BIS, the Portuguese Water Dog, GCH CH Claircreek’s Impression de Matisse, and the Number Three Working Dog, the Samoyed, GCH CH Pebbles' Run Play It Again Ham, and as we reported this morning the Numbers Nine, 11,  13, & 18 Working Dogs, the Mastiff, GCH CH Goldleaf's Trouble Coming CGC, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, GCH CH Derby's Toast With Gusto, the Leonberger, GCH CH A, Feiner Eros, and Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Dezperado's Hallelujah CA.

The Herding Group was led by this year’s Number Two Dog All Breeds, the Old English Sheepdog, GCH CH Bugaboo’s Picture Perfect, one of the six Top Twenty Herding Dogs who will be seen in the group tonight.  They others are the Numbers Three, Six, Eight, 12, & 17 Herding Dogs, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Riverside Telltail Coco Posh, the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Stonepillar's Steel Blu, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Coventry Just A Little Crush, the Smooth Collie, GCH CH Travler Kelise Overdrive, and the Briard, GCH CH Ne Orageux's Flash Point.

SUNDAY MORNING IN ORLANDO FL

GCH CH J'Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice JE 

It’s day two of the AKC/Eukanuba Championship (AENC) in Orlando FL and the climax of the show season. One of the things we look forward to each year are the “Ghosts of Christmas Past”, top winning dogs from previous years that we have not seen in the current year in the US. Yesterday it was the 2013 AENC World Challenge winner and 2014 Crufts BIS, the Standard Poodle, CH Afterglow Maverick Sabre, winning a very tough variety competition before claiming the Non-Sporting Group last night. Today it was 2010’s Number One Dog All Breeds, the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J'Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice JE, making a surprise appearance to win the breed and another chance at becoming the AENC BIS.

Among this year’s top winners to make it through the breed judging was the Number Nine Working Dog, the Mastiff, GCH CH Goldleaf's Trouble Coming CGC, who bested the Number Five Working Dog, GCH CH Willow Ridge’s Risky Business, in the breed. Also advancing were the Number 11 Working Dog, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, GCH CH Derby's Toast With Gusto, the Number Working Dog, the Leonberger, GCH CH A, Feiner Eros, the Number 18 Working Dog, Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Dezperado's Hallelujah CA, the Number Seven Terrier, the Border Terrier, GCH CH Meadowlake Pants On Fire, the Number 11 Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, GCH CH Angarda Deja Vu Looking At You, and the Number 17 Terrier, the Miniature Bull Terrier, GCH CH Dytona VIP.

St Cloud MN seems an unlikely alternative to Orlando FL in mid-December, but then it is enjoying unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid-40s. Nonetheless, the hometown Granite City Kennel Club of St. Cloud, Minnesota is holding two shows there this weekend. Yesterday’s show ended with judge Barbara Demspey Alderman in the final ring with the Weimaraner, GCH CH Doc’s Crosswind Starry-Eyed Jewel Of Acadia, the Whippet, CH Sporting Fields Dashing Maui Man, the Giant Schnauzer, GCH CH Nightline Viking A Tanglewood, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, GCH CH Cumhill Hell Raiser, the Chinese Crested, GCH CH Dejavu I Want'A Talk About Me, the Keeshond, GCH CH Raylen’s Razzle Dazzle Rose, and the German Shepherd Dog, GCH CH Lockenhaus Rumor Has It V Kenlyn.

Going to the head of the line was the Chinese Crested, Toby, followed by the Giant, Thor. It was the fifth BIS in 31 final appearances this year for Toby and handler Daryl Mrtin.

SATURDAY IN ALLENTOWN PA

While most of this week’s attention is focused on the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando FL, there are shows elsewhere in the United States. The Lehigh Valley Kennel Club opened their two day set in Allentown PA on Saturday and put judge Ken McDermott in the final ring with the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Telltale American Ride, the Saluki, GCH CH Takara The Time Is Now, the Akita, GCH CH CR-Wicca’s Trade Secret, the Bedlington Terrier, CH Ashcroft Mystic Red Sky At Night, the Pug, GCH CH Hill Country Tag I’m It, the French Bulldog, GCH CH Dolces Made In Taiwan Of Perfect Idea, and the German Shepherd Dog, Harmonias Intense Desire. 

GCH CH CR-Wicca’s Trade Secret 

He named the Springer, Randy, as his Best and the Akita, Trader, as his Reserve. Randy is the country’s Three Sporting Dog with 13 BIS and 95 Sporting Groups this year.
